THE FEELING OF LIGHT
May 2024
For me, yellow and orange light is home, comfort, and contentment, it is a warm hug. This project aims to make this feeling and experience accessible.
The piece is an interactive installation that encourages the visitor to touch and hold it. By having that close connection the person can feel the glow of the light on their face and the soft texture of the fabric. As the form is held the golden light is absorbed by the bearer within this meditative moment. It creates an alternative focus like a moth drawn to a flame, other exterior troubles are put to the side as the interaction and warmth is experienced.
As humans, we exist because of light. It is the basis of how we survive, it is the sun, it is fire. We feel comfort in its presence as it means we are safe. It is the oldest and simplest of things. This work aims to reground us in that simplicity, giving a momentary pause from reality.
The work is hung to allow movement so that the visitor can interact with the piece in whichever way they are drawn to. The light can be pulled down or risen by the wire, the viewer can align their face with the light, hold it within their hands, sit with it in their lap or lay with it swaying above them. The interaction is intuitive, playful, and individual for each person.
